Women's Winter Coat Styles

Most women have more than one winter coat in their closet. There are lots of different occasions we need to dress for in the winter that definitely call for more than one women's winter coat. Each of us usually needs a dress coat to attend holiday parties. If you ice skate or spend a lot of time outdoors you'll need a serious Winter parka with a hood to keep you warm. You'll need a coat to get from the house to the car and back.
I have several different winter coats in my closet. Two are wool, one is a classic double breasted black wool coat in mid calf length for special occasions and one is a wool swing coat I bought from J Jill years ago that reverses from black to brown. I wear the swing coat as an everyday work coat. I have an LL Bean Adirondack Barn Coat that's flannel lined so it's nice and warm. That's my casual out to the car and back coat. I can layer lots of things underneath it in very cold weather. I have a ski parka from Obermeyer that has a removable hood that's super warm for my outdoor activities like shoveling snow.I've made a conscious decision that I will give up fashion for warmth. I always try to look fashionable by adding a nice scarf and wearing coordinating gloves, but warmth comes first. I chose both the wool coats I did because they buttoned up to the neck, which helps keep the warmth in. I can also dress them up with pashmina or cashmere scarves. I also purposely chose these coats in classic styles and colors.
 
I'm not a fan of big puffy down coats, but they seem to be making a come back. Designers like Laundry, Kenneth Cole, The North Face, Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger, Style & Co. and INC. are sporting "puffers" jackets and coats this year. I guess they're not bad if you're naturally taller and slim, but I felt as an average size 14 it made me look way bulkier then I want to look. So the puffer coat is not for me.
Kenneth Cole is offering what he calls a Refined Wool Pea Coat in a selection of classic colors. Jones New York is offering a Hooded Angora Coat in mid thigh length in colors of black, camel and red.
For those who prefer faux fur and shearling take a look at Calvin Klein Faux Leopard Fur Wrap Coat. It would be a a very flattering style on any woman with it's wide wing collar and leather belt to nip in the waist. Gallery and Kristen Blake are also offering faux fur coats through Nordstrom. We also liked the Hilary Radley New York Faux Shearling Coat for $188.

As for leather coats, the styles are as widely varied as they can be. You can find top notch quality women's leather coats for between $250 and $300 (more with faux fur or fur collars). Most designer leather coats from top designers such as Andrew Marc, True Religion, L.A.M.B and Rizal and Linea Selecta run at least two to three times more.
