My favorite coat is my double breasted, mid calf black wool coat. I certainly don't wear it every day, but it's there for any time I may need it, and over the past eleven years that I've had it many occasions have come up when I've worn it.  Many wardrobe planners will tell you that a women's wool coat is one of the basic foundations of a winter wardrobe. As with any other piece of apparel if properly chosen a classic women's wool coat can give you 20+ years of service.

When I chose my women's wool coat I gave it some consideration.  I wanted a classic timeless coat that would never go out of style.  My wool coat is double breasted and has buttons at the sleeve.  It's a good length for whatever I wear with it, a dress or pants.  I personally don't like the look when a dress is longer than a coat, I think it looks sloppy.  With a mid calf wool coat this isn't a problem.  A mid calf length also helps to keep you warmer.  I also wanted a women's wool coat that would button almost all the way up to the neck.  Why buy a wool coat that is styled with a neckline that doesn't button to help keep you warmer?  Of course in a case like this you can always add a scarf.

One of the most expensive wool coats you can find are those made of specialty wool fibers like cashmere or camels hair. Pure camel hair that is used in coats is usually gathered from camels undercoats when the naturally molt. This under coat hair is what makes camel hair so soft and plush. Also, as fibers like wool, cashmere and camels hair are natural fibers they naturally insulate to keep you warm in the winter and cooler in the spring thereby extending the length of seasons of wear ability.

Boiled wool coats are also very popular due to their softness and insulative properties.  They are made exceptionally soft and warm by the boiling process which shrinks the fibers together.

So what style of women's wool coat are you looking for?  Something that is classic will give you the longest wear ability style wise.  There are many classic styles for you to choose from, peacoat, double breasted, trench, swing coat and long coat.  Also keep in mid you are looking for classic colors like black or navy blue, brown or tan.  Sure, that vivid pink wool coat may be in season this year, but what about next year?  A black or navy wool coat is always in style and will enhance whatever you're wearing.

So where to find wool coats?  You can find some great buys on wool coats at your local Macy's or Boscov's at the beginning or the end of the season.  Generally end of season sales mean wool coats a half price. Try looking at Anne Taylor, Nordstrom, Eddie Bauer, LL Bean or Spiegel to see what styles of wool coats they are offering.

Macy's carries a wide range of women's wool coats from Kenneth Cole, Jessica Simpson, Larry Levine, Jones New York, DKNY, Nine West, Esprit and Laundry.
